On this blog, I have often been whining about how we, the people of India are often denied our consumer rights. (read here) But for a change, I have something new to say... thanks to the city consumer forum of Chennai.

Chinnadurai, a businessman was supposed to return from Singapore on 31st October 2009. He booked a ticket with Air India, and had a confirmed ticket to travel from Singapore to Chennai.
According to him, on that day, he arrived at Singapore airport well in time and was issued a boarding pass. However, He wasn't allowed to travel.
He complained, his boarding pass was "snatched" and he was asked to travel on the next day!
Mr. Chinnadurai, in his complaint to the Consumer Forum claimed that being forced to stay back in Singapore, he had suffered loss in business. Hence, he filed the complaint with Consumer Forum, seeking compensation.

Airlines do not preserve the right to treat the consumers as they wish as they wish. The consumer forum in this case readily upheld the consumer right.
Mr. Chinnadurai, in his complaint to the Consumer Forum claimed that being forced to stay back in Singapore, he had suffered loss in business. Hence, he filed the complaint with Consumer Forum, seeking compensation.
The airline maintained that the consumer had arrived after the doors of plane were closed. The duty Officer helped him by offering him to fly back to Chennai on the following day however they failed to procure adequate evidence.
Ruling of District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chennai (South) :
“The opposite party (the airline), having issued a boarding pass to the complainant, ought to have made necessary announcements to procure the complainant and call upon him immediately to board the flight.The opposite party’s act in not allowing him to board and travel the flight even after issuing a boarding pass amounts to unfair trade practice and deficiency in service”
The complaint was filed sometime in 2009 and Finally in 2012, the Consumer Forum, asked Air India to pay a compensation of Rs. 50,000 to the complainant.
