On the 2nd Partiton of Bengal...

" WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:

JUSTICE, social, economic and political;
LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;
EQUALITY of status and of opportunity;
and to promote among them all
FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation;

IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION. "

Thus goes the preamble of our very own Constitution and it feels indeed very sad that we have utterly failed to give ourselves the things we promised. Above all other things we have failed to give ourselves Unity...!!!

The hard hitting truth today is that India stands divided.. divided by geography, by economy and above all by its own People. While we make huge declarations on the strength of Unity, we ourselves are taking it away from ourselves!

We live in a mystical land. The vernacular changes in every 250 KM within India. Its a cradle of great civilizations and many many languages. Every region in India has a fresh tradition. And if I were to present a picture-perfect description of my nation.. I would go on to say how we have great Unity despite our diversity. I really hope for such a harmonious existence for all of us but let's face it..

Unity in Diversity... Unity is our strength... This is a big fat lie we tell ourselves, to our younger generations and to the other people, when we talk about the Indian Culture and heritage!

The truth is bitter and in straight simple words is that we the Indians, are divided amongst ourselves.. by color, caste, creed, region, religion and tradition! We don't uphold other traditions of India with as much love and respect as we do to our own. Each one of us believes that they are the actual sons of this soil.. while the rest are all intruders who came to India centuries ago and settled.

The Mughals did not divide us... nor did the British. They only brought out the rifts that were hidden within our hearts, and we thought it to be better to break up our Mother India into pieces and have our own shares, rather than uniting into one big strong nation. We created the East Bengal which went on to be Bangladesh. We created Pakistan.. and now our own brethren and our own soil has assumed the face of the most potent foes of India..

History does not repeat itself.. we repeat the history! After 106 years, Bengal is on the verge of splitting again. We have another 12 aspirant states. We are slowly heading back to a situation that made easier for the British to invade and conquer us.

Not satisfied with breaking up into three nations.. we continue to slice up what is remaining into tinier pieces. But why? For representation? for cultural Integrity..?

Well it is true that many communities and classes are ill-represented in the parliaments. But splitting apart is not the solution. If we really have Unity in our diversity.. a member in the legislative houses wouldn't be a representative of his class or community.. He would be a fair representative of every Individual of his region.. whether or not from the same class/community!
And the solution to our problem is to foster that spirit!!

Is it so difficult to give every class of people equal representation? Is it so difficult to imbibe a tradition that is not practiced in our own creed? Is fighting, resenting and getting divided a better solution?

I dream of an India.. where you could be a part of all the festivals celebrated, where all people lived in harmony, and shared each other's tradition and culture. Life here could then be a never ending feast!

A place where every religion is our religion, where all Indians are Our people... where no caste is big or small... where everybody is treated equally ...whether or not his class is represented in the greater houses of power!!

We need to make up a truely united, integrated India.. where harmony will get a new definition.. and only we can make this happen. Dear Indians.. Let's unite and Stand Up and say cheers to the feast of Indian life!!!
