Cricket, bollywood and now a new domain pursued passionately by the Indians-- Technology.
The cricket-maniac, bollywood-crazy Indian masses are noe turning tech-savvy. 30% of the Indian youth today have multimedia phones.
and the elite 25% of them have smartphones loaded with features.
Every new tech-trend that emerges finds us welcoming it with open arms.
Well it might be the same for teenagers all around the world.. but let's focus on Indians.
How many students today have the world at their fingertips? Well that is not exactly the point I am trying to make...
The point I want to point towards is- are we educated enough to handle the digitization of our lives?? (and I am not talking about our degrees)
We, who are skeptical about sharing even the slightest of our details with our next doors neighbours, are generously giving off all our info to unknown people out there!
The sad thing is, you think you are entering your info into just a website, or you are giving permissions to access your profile to an application.. what harm can it do to you?
what we tend to forget is that ultimately there are human beings behind the digital veils of the web (who could be individuals/groups or some agency)
Take the free applications scattered all over the web, which we hastily download unto our devices. What if one of these applications are actually sending your pics to some unknown server in Terroristan even without your knowledge. Apps may not be doing only what they are supposed to do... They can be doing much more than that!
Many of us benevolently contribute pictures of landmarks to google and other sites.
But take a second thought my friends.. is it really required?
I think it is really a matter of social and national security to have the pictures of our malls, bus stops and banks put up on the net. Even if it is a reputed company like Google.. rather I should say moreso because it is a company like Google, the data base which many countries might be trying to Hack into. Sadly these companies have fallen prey to petty hacks time and again.
(recently there was news of China hacking into google servers, somehow the issue got lost into the hay-stack of other news)
Thankfully the government has actively prevented Google from taking pictures of Bangalore city. Streetview project in India was a move totally unrequired currently. Were we not able to find our ways withought the street view... If the normal google maps points to a location and says here is the 5star restaurant, do we still need to look at the visual picture of 5star restaurant to understand that?
A person smart enough to use street view to go somewhere, will also be smart enough to find the place through a simple map.
Some Gizmo geeks are finding it rather ridiculous to think that this could be a security threat. Well, there is not much to say tosuch unreasonably and excessively tech-savvy people. Rather, lets remind them of 26/11attacks were terrorists relied heavily on Google Maps to locate their targets. Germany, a fairly advanced nation has also opposed and criticised this project. Lulz Security has recently reminded us of how the Big Names in the web-world aren't immune to security breaches!!!
We have the Army for land, Airforce for the skies, Navy for the seas.... But the CyberSpace unprotected ??... and it is in this aspect that we are most vulnerable. Let us be Vigilant, careful and defensive in our use of technology and gadgets..
